In 1968, the Faculty of Light Industry, as a branch of the Polytechnic Institute of Georgia, was opened in Kutaisi. It was the Faculty of Light Industry that, in 1974, served as a foundation for the establishment of N. Muskhelishvili State Polytechnic Institute of Kutaisi, which, 1992, was conferred the university status.
Currently, alongside with training students in the fields of light and food industries, academic of the Faculty have been actively involved in the research and practical activities, assicated with Georgian traditional popular handicraft technologies, such as the restoration and sophistication of hand-made carpets, tapestry, church clothes, etc.

The Faculty employs 10 full professors, 28 associate professors, and 8 assistant professors.
